Fraud Prevention Pilot Seeks Participation from Indianapolis-Area Providers, Suppliers As part of its efforts to fight Medicare fraud and abuse, National Government Services is seeking assistance from Indianapolis-area physicians and suppliers who order or supply durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) to Medicare beneficiaries. The pilot program has been approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and is designed to protect provider-specific information, such as your NPI, from misuse or identity theft and to reduce inappropriate DMEPOS payments. Here s how it works: A free magnetic stripe card will be mailed to providers and suppliers located in Indianapolis-area ZIP Codes that are part of the pilot program. The card should be used each time DMEPOS items are ordered or supplied to a Medicare beneficiary. Providers and suppliers will swipe the card using their existing credit card terminals or integrated point of sale system just as they would with any credit card transaction. The card will not transmit protected information about the beneficiary, provider or supplier, and data received via the credit card terminals will ensure that DMEPOS orders originated in a legitimate physician s office and were dispensed by a legitimate DMEPOS supplier. There are no fees to swipe the DMEPOS card. The cards will be mailed in phases beginning in June. Providers who already have received a card should register and activate it by calling the number on the card and following the instructions provided with the card. Providers and suppliers who have not yet received a card should receive it in late July. We encourage your participation in this important initiative!
